my story
Raised in equal parts by T.V and the woods, I use my love of nature and media to expand upon ideas of identity, emotion, and expression. Growing up in Wyoming served as a foundation for falling in love with nature and moving back to my birthplace of Portland,OR reignited my passion for the arts. My pieces contend with ourselves and how we fit into the human and non human world. Exploring childhood circumstances, sexuality, and gender are themes that show up frequently. I use ceramics, insects, and oil paint to explore these ideas, with each medium able to feed the other in an interdisciplinary approach. In tandem with the natural world I am also inspired by comics and animation; my human subjects celebrate the joy of the body and all of its different forms. My plants and bugs highlight the beauty of even our most detested arthropods. Few things are as binary as we see them, and we often overlook key foundational aspects of what it means to be human: The ability to change. The ability to adapt. The ability to connect with forces outside of ourselves. When we are faced with fear and uncertainty the only option is not to run away or fight- it is to learn.
